Overview
Foreigners staying in Japan for more than 3 months must register as residents. This allows you to receive a residence certificate and access various administrative services.
Types of Procedures
Moving-in Notification
Within 14 days of moving
Required when moving from another municipality or from overseas.
Moving-out Notification
From 14 days before moving
Required when moving to another municipality.
Change of Address
Within 14 days of moving
When changing address within the same municipality.
Required Documents
- Residence Card (for foreigners)
- Passport
- My Number notification card or My Number card (if you have)
- Moving-out certificate (when moving from another municipality)
- Documents proving relationship with head of household (if necessary)
- Personal seal (if you have)
Procedure Steps
Prepare Documents
Prepare all necessary documents. Residence card and passport are mandatory.
Go to City Office
Go to the municipal office in your area. Some have special counters for foreigners.
Fill Application Form
Get and fill the application form at the counter. Ask staff if you have questions.
Submit Documents
Submit the completed form and required documents.
Get Residence Certificate
You can obtain a copy of residence certificate if needed (fee required).
Important Points
14-day Deadline
Moving-in and change of address must be done within 14 days or you may be fined.
My Number Card Application
After registration, you can apply for My Number card. Can be used as ID.
Family Registration
When living with family, register as head of household and household members.
